Kilve Chantry
Perhaps the most demanding, on-going conservation project in Somerset, a Scheduled Ancient Monument that is actually a remarkable unrestored part of the adjoining medieval house of c. 1300.
Thatched when Wordsworth wrote his lines on the adjacent church and now roofless, the east gable leans 695mm in its height and was eventually saved from collapse by the concerted efforts of the SPAB, Somerset County Council and English Heritage with this anthropomorphic support designed by Patrick Stow, on which the gable is now believed to rest. A vivid illustration of neglected Lias decay.
Photographed during erection October 2004.
The practitioner has for many years been a case-worker for the SPAB and acted for English Heritage for the grant-aided repair and replastering of the church tower. The practice was instrumental in bringing this to a temporary resolution. For a report on the emergency repairs see SPAB Cornerstone magazine, no.4, 2004.
